Applications, limits and risks of Artificial Intelligence will be highlighted themes at the 24th WRNP

Attentive to the most relevant trends in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), the organization of the 24th RNP Workshop (WRNP) will highlight one of the most current and complex topics in the area, artificial intelligence (AI). There will be five panels to discuss some of the countless possibilities that artificial intelligence can provide for the sector. The event takes place on May 22 and 23, in a hybrid format: in person in Brasília and online transmission of the main schedule. Sign up!

Director of the Center for Studies and Research in Administration at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and leader of the Technical Committee on Data Science and Intelligence at RNP, Daniela Brauner will mediate one of the tables on the subject during the WRNP. For the researcher, ChatGPT, a tool launched at the end of last year, has been positive in disseminating knowledge about AI to a previously unreached audience. But she warns: its indiscriminate use can end up making us less exercise our creative capacity.

“Many are delegating creative activities to AI tools. With that, we run the risk of losing our creative potential, just because of the ease of delegating. At the same time, AI can also be an excellent inclusion tool, as people who cannot communicate, write or draw now have the possibility to do so through texts or voice commands”, ponders Brauner.

The professor points out that care is needed for the development of these technologies, especially in relation to the algorithms that underlie them. “We must ensure that AI-based systems are developed and used ethically, legally and responsibly, always taking into account the potential impacts on humanity”, points out Brauner.

For the leader of RNP's Data Science and Intelligence Technical Committee, the proper functioning and positive impact of artificial intelligence on society also depend on investment in education. “We cannot create, train or use AI for evil. In my view, this will only be possible when we develop computational thinking in children, to create adults who are more aware of the use and potential of technologies such as AI, as it will be in everything in the future”, she concludes.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

One of the main applications of AI for ICT is machine learning (ML), which allows the development of algorithms so that computers are able to perform tasks without human interference and identify patterns and inferences.

At WRNP 2023, a panel organized in partnership with the Symposium of the Brazilian Computing Society (SBRC) will be dedicated to the theme: “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Computer Networks: Myths, Facts and the Future”. To dispel myths, discuss facts and the future of this technology, the table, which will take place on May 23, at 5:30 pm, will be attended by Damla Turgut, President of Computer Science at the University of Central Florida, Antonio Augusto de A. Rocha, an adjunct professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Institute of Computing at the Universidade Federal Fluminense, and Bruno Ribeiro, from Purdue University. The panel will be conducted in English.
