Pioneerism in Brazil
We have helped bringing the internet to the country to meet the aspirations of the academic community. Today, we continue contributing to the evolution of the internet in Brazil and worldwide.
RNP was created in September 1989 by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) at that time. Its goal was to build a national Internet network infrastructure in the academic area. The National Research Network, as it was called at the beginning, had the function to disseminate the use of networks in the country as well.
Internet comes to Brazil
Implementation of the first internet network in the country, which reached ten states and the Federal District.
RNP is dedicated to disseminating internet services to the academic community by means of seminars, setting up thematic repositories and training, stimulating the formation of awareness about its strategic importance for the country and becoming a reference in internet technology applications.
Support from large companies
Numberless companies that manufacture computer products, such as Compaq, Equitel, IBM, Philips, among others, are now offering concrete support to RNP by supplying equipment, software and even financing direct project activities.
Creation of the first Brazilian network security center.
To support the consolidation of the business internet in the country, the Internet Information Center/BR was created to support the emergence of network providers and users. More than 3,000 questions about the internet were answered in its first year of operation.
Beginning of the opening of the business internet in Brazil. In this period, RNP underwent redefinition of its role, extending its access services to all sectors of society.
The National Education and Research Network Association (AsRNP) is created to develop and implement the program, under the guidance of a Management Committee (CG-RNP) formed of representatives from MEC and MCT.
RNP Inter-Ministry Program Appears
Ministries of Science and Technology (MCT) and Education (MEC) sign an agreement to take the academic network to a new level. The Inter-Ministry Program for Implementation and Maintenance of the National Network for Education and Research (PI-MEC/MCT), today called the Inter-Ministry Program RNP (PI-RNP), is born.
RNP internet network, called Backbone RNP2, is officially inaugurated, with capacity of 200 Mb/s and more than 11 thousand research groups benefited.
RNP Association is qualified by the federal government as a Social Organization.
Support to research and education
Social Organization National Network for Education and Research (RNP/OS) signs management contract with MCT for the promotion of technological research activities in development networks and the operation of advanced network means and services that benefit national research and education.
The initiative to improve the network infrastructure at national, metropolitan and local levels, i.e. in campus, was called New RNP; to meet the demands of specific communities, such as telemedicine, biodiversity, astronomy, etc. with innovative applications and services; and to promote the training of human resources in ICT.
Rede Ipê appears
Year when Rede Ipê was launched with optical links and wavelength technology, operating at multiple gigabits per second.
NP begins the construction of its own metropolitan optic fiber networks to provide access between each Point of Presence (PoP) and the campuses of the user organizations in the same city by means of the Community Education and Research Networks Program (Redecomep).
1st big jump of Rede Ipê
Beginning of the sixth generation of Rede Ipê with capacity increased by 280%, which raised it to the level of the most advanced academic networks in the world. The jump was made possible by the cooperation agreement with the telecommunication company Oi and the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel).
2nd big jump of Rede Ipê
Rede Ipê undergoes a great qualitative jumo, reaching a capacity of 213.2 Gb/s, 244% increase.
Expansion of Redecomep
Redecomep Program expands its operations in almost 40 cities in the country.
All RNP Points of Presence (PoPs) are now served at Gb/s capacity. Thus, we celebrate the complete “gigatization” of our network.
We celebrate 25 years of our history offering network infrastructure for education, research and innovation.
Our Ipê network receives the first high-speed connections at 100 Gb/s.
