ViaIpê is a model of transparency in connection quality

ViaIpê is a tool that allows the users of the Brazilian academic network to check the quality of their connection in real time and draw up use and performance statistics. With the platform, it is possible to access information like connection capacity, upload and download occupation, latency and loss of packages. With a friendly interface, no technical knowledge is necessary to interpret the information and any researcher, professor, student or associate can check how the quality of the connection of their campus or institution is doing.

Developed by the Brazilian National Research and Educational Network (RNP), with support from the Points of Presence (PoPs), ViaIpê allows the users to evaluate the service quality and check for possible points of failure, to subsequently inform errors and contribute to the constant improvement of their institution’s connectivity. In the opinion of RNP’s adjunct-director of Network and Operation Engineering, Ari Frazão, the tool puts into practice the policy of transparency towards users, with regard to the service provided. “Once this information becomes public, RNP ensures that the users have the possibility to exercise two basic rights: the right to access to information and to always demand a better service”, he stated.

The tool can also be used to obtain statistics that assist with the management reports and governance practices. “The bodies connected to the public administration, RNP and its Points of Presence are able to use such data to map out institutions and regions that require further investment in communication, for example”, he added.
