Universities will bring their experiences to the RNP Forum

ICT managers, researchers and deans will talk about the use of technologies

The exchange of knowledge, the presentation of new ideas and innovative models, as well as the establishment of connections between participants is one of the main objectives of the RNP Forum 2022. This year, the academic community will have ample space to show their successful experiences related to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and also to debate the challenges encountered. Deans, ICT managers, professors and researchers from several universities will present themselves in panels, workshops and flashtalks, between August 30th and September 1st. With the theme Cybersecurity and Privacy, the event will be 100% digital and registration is still open.

“The main characteristic of the RNP Forum is dialogue and active listening, promoting the exchange of knowledge for the ICT managers of our institutions. Moment in which we can collaborate with experiences, share difficulties and find solutions and alternatives”, says Antônio Carlos F. Nunes, director of Services and Solutions at RNP and general coordinator of the RNP Forum.

How to use technology to advance research and science

On the 30th of August, right after the opening table of the Forum, deans will meet to discuss the technological needs for the continuous development of research and science in Brazil. Sustainable alternatives for a safe, scalable and socially inclusive model will be discussed. The deans of the Federal University of Southern Bahia (UFSB) and the Federal Institute of Ceará (IFC) have already confirmed their presence, as well as the dean of the University of Campinas (Unicamp). The conversation will be mediated by José Luiz Ribeiro Filho, Director of People, Administration and Finance at RNP.

The impact of the advent of 5G on the university will also be the subject of a panel. On August 31, at 10:10 am, Professor Aldebaro Klautau, from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), will receive Eduardo Grizendi, Director of Engineering and Operations at RNP, Gustavo Correa Lima, from the Center for Research and Development in Telecommunications (CPqD) and researcher Sílvia Massruhá, from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa). They will talk about how the new technology can bring benefits to Brazilian teaching and research institutions. They will also address the issue of the strategic direction of the use of 5G in the RNP System.

For a national research data access network

The possibility of connecting higher education institutions through a national network of Open Access to Research Data (AADP) will be discussed on August 30th, in a panel that starts at 3 pm. In 2021, an initiative to make such a network viable was launched by RNP, the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT). Participants will analyze the challenges of the undertaking and shed light on the privacy and security issues arising from it. Representatives of the Brazilian Center for Physical Research (CBPF), the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) and the Federal Rural University of Amazonas (UFRA) will report their experiences in this first year of operation of the network, in a dialogue mediated by Carolina Felicíssimo, from RNP.

For Nunes, the variety of sectors, participation profiles and thematic areas – such as health, arts and humanities – in the RNP Forum expands the spectrum of knowledge and possibilities for ICT managers. One concern, he points out, is to take care of the present without ceasing to discuss issues that are “vectors of the future”.

“The event has become an expected annual locus for the digital exchange and transformation process, encouraging the advancement of ICT and its impact on the best application for education and research institutions in the country”, he highlights.
