RNP representation at the global eduroam committee

- 02/07/2015

The Global eduroam Governance Committee (GeGC) marks the beginning of its third term, recognizing the increasingly global scope of the service and expanding its members to include representatives from five world regions: Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and North America. The previous terms of reference listed members only from Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. However, with more than 60 recognised roaming operators worldwide, GEANT called for nominees for committee membership from across the expanded eduroam family, including RNP Service Manager Leandro Guimarães, as representative for Latin America, together with Alejandro Lara, from Reuna, a Chilean academic network.

“My participation in GeGC, representing Latin America, shows the prominence that Brazil has in eduroam. With the Elcira project, we created the Latin American eduroam Committee (CLATe, in Portuguese), bringing together the work of the academic networks in the region even further”, Leandro stressed.

GeGC performed its annual meeting on June 18, during the Terena Networking Conference (TNC15), which took place this year in Porto, Portugal. Upon such occasion, the new term of reference was drafted, formally recognizing the growth in several world regions. "This new term is an ideal time to show how eduroam has grown dramatically and the new committee is ideally placed to help guide eduroam forward and to meet the opportunities of increase coverage and user numbers and to support global R&E collaboration”, Géant Project Development Manager Brook Schofield stressed.
