The Ponto BR Information and Coordination Center (NIC.Br), in cooperation with the National Education and Research Network (RNP), inaugurated another IX/PTT Traffic Exchange Point in the country, this time in Acre. This is the 36th center in the national territory and the fifth in the North region, and is located at the Federal University of Acre (Ufac), where the RNP's Point of Presence operates in the state (PoP-AC).

The inauguration ceremony took place on the 10th of May, on the main campus of Ufac, and was attended by the university's dean, Guida Aquino, and other representatives of the City of Rio Branco and the Government of the State of Acre and beneficiary institutions. RNP was represented by the Network Infrastructure coordinator, from the Engineering and Operations Board, Helmann Penze, and the PoP-AC coordinator, Renato Nunes.

“Today, with the inauguration of this PTT, professors, researchers, students, customers of providers and other beneficiaries will feel the improvement in the exchange of content traffic, it will no longer be necessary to seek information in other locations, since it will occur locally”, said the dean of Ufac, Guida Aquino.

The dean also praised RNP's performance in supporting the project. “RNP has this role of promoting local development, supporting public policies, bringing new technology and seeking local partners to take the academic network to locations that still have this need”, she added.

What is IX.Br

Traffic Exchange Points (PTTs) work as hubs where providers can connect their servers, facilitating information traffic. In Brazil, IX.Br is a local PTT project managed by the Ponto Br Information and Coordination Center (NIC.br) and by the Brazilian Internet Management Committee (CGI.br), which facilitates the flow of information between internet providers and online content in the country.

IX.br promotes and creates the necessary infrastructure for direct interconnection between the networks ("Autonomous Systems" - ASs) that make up the Brazilian Internet. IX.br's activities are aimed at metropolitan regions in the country that are highly interested in exchanging Internet traffic.
