RNP videoconference service is one of the first advanced services offered to the academic community, providing virtual rooms on demand for real-time communication and collaboration. These rooms are able to make possible, by means of the Ipê network, videoconferences with over three simultaneously connected points. The service allows recording resources, transmission by streaming and integration with videoconference systems that use ISDN (Integrated Services for Digital Network), in addition to the use of high definition (HD) and new functionalities that may arise as a result of improvements and continuous investment in expanding the infrastructure.

Recently, the Federal University of Itajubá (in Portuguese, Unifei), in Minas Gerais state, published an article in its institutional website about the use of our Videoconference service. According to the article, Unifei has been using the system since 2011 in its main events, especially to conduct the interface between the main campus in Itajubá and the Itabira campus. The Communication Coordinator in Information Technology Adriana Cristine Corrêa, which works in the institution, recalled that the service began to be implemented in the university with the first equipment provided by RNP.

Unifei’s Dean, Professor Dagoberto Alves de Almeida, stressed that this feature allows the university to save time and funds, such as transportation, payment of daily fees and accommodation for the institution’s academic community. “In these times of budget cuts, we are making rational use of the public funds by investing in alternatives like Videoconferencing, which brings effectiveness to the administration”, Almeida highlighted, also pointing out the quality of image and audio.

Until mid-2012, the videoconferences in the institution were restricted to the administrative departments of Itajubá and Itabira. However, with the purchase of equipment, new rooms were set up for such purpose. The service is currently used in researches, project development, examination boards, administrative department, union meetings and meetings of the Superior Councils.

“RNP recorded approximately 600 hours, in April 2015, of Videoconference service’s use, which represents an average increase of about 20% per year. In a country of continental size, the offer of communication and collaboration services such as fone@RNP, Videoconference, Telepresence and Web Conference contributes to RNP client institutions bringing the researchers and professors from Brazil and the world over closer”, Service Manager Leandro Guimarães explained.
