Virtual meeting is the 100th session of the Special Telemedicine Group on Child and Adolescent Health

- 18/09/2017

Next Thursday, on September 21st, paediatric physicians and healthcare professionals will meet from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the 100th meeting of the SIG Child and Adolescent Health, a Special Interest Group that brings together 38 health institutions in all regions of the country, through the Telemedicine University Network (Rute) and coordinated by the Brazilian National Research and Educational Network (RNP). The theme of this celebratory meeting is "Safe Internet for Children and Adolescents".

The session will feature speakers from the E.S.S.E. Mundo Digital project, Nethics, Safernet, the Internet Steering Committee in Brazil (CGI.br) and Instituto Dimicuida. During the meeting, participants will be able to discuss cases and propose initiatives to guide professionals and parents to avoid risks to the physical and mental health of children and adolescents that may result from the access to internet.

The SIG is coordinated by Evelyn Eisenstein of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Suzy Cavalcante of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), and João Amaral of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). "The Telemedicine University Network is an unprecedented experience that gathers from large university hospitals to institutions in the most remote regions. This provides, through technology, the spreading of knowledge to physicians, students and technicians of other specialties. It is important to emphasize that this training reflects very positively in the performance of these professionals in hospitals and in the public healthcare network, providing free services to the population", says the doctor and professor Evelyn Eisenstein.

This is not the first time that a delicate topic is debated in the group. Over the last ten years, the Child and Adolescent Health SIG has developed a pioneering work, creating a collaborative network for spreading information and discussing clinical cases through the teleconference mechanism. Concerned with the advancement of alcohol consumption by children and adolescents, for example, the SIG has already produced and distributed, through a partnership with the Brazilian Society of Paediatrics (SBP), a Guidance Manual, aimed at professionals who are faced with cases of early alcoholic beverage intake.

The event will be broadcast via video and web-conference on webconf2.rnp.br/rutenutsufba

About Rute

The Telemedicine University Network is an initiative of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC), supported by the Financier of Studies and Projects (Finep) and the Brazilian Association of University Hospitals (Abrahue), and coordinated by the Brazilian National Research and Educational Network (RNP). The initiative supports the improvement of existing telemedicine projects and encourages the emergence of future interinstitutional work. The program currently includes 130 Rute telemedicine units that are open and in operation throughout Brazil. The network also has about 50 Special Interest Groups comprised of professionals from various health specialties and subspecialties.

Rute has the high-capacity infrastructure of the national RNP backbone, the Ipê network, and the Research and Education Community Networks (Redes Comunitárias de Ensino e Pesquisa - Redecomep). This initiative complements the coordinated effort to provide end-to-end infrastructure (national, metropolitan and institutional) appropriate to the use of advanced network applications. Through the RNP link with RedCLARA (Latin American Cooperation of Advanced Networks), participating institutions are supported by partner networks in Latin America, Europe, Japan, Australia, the United States, BRICS countries and Portuguese-speaking countries.
