RNP publishes Annual Security Report 2020

The National Education and Research Network (RNP) has just announced the publishing of the Annual Security Report 2020. The document reports the main events, lists data, trends, analytical analyses, and brings an interesting article on the subject, using language that is simple and accessible to the audience.

According to the report by RNP, Information Security has never been as discussed as it was in 2020. There were several cases involving breach leakage and system invasion in Brazil and worldwide. However, due to social isolation and the increase of remote work and education, it was a year in which there was a reduction of 13% in the number of security vulnerabilities detected and of 22% in security incidents reported in the RNP System in comparison to the previous year.

Developed from data obtained by CAIS - Security Emergency Response Center, which detects, resolves, and prevents security incidents in the Brazilian academic network, in addition to developing, promoting, and disseminating security practices in networks of RNP and other institutions linked to it, the study also presents information about the significant growth and activity of CAIS and RNP with the academic community and other institutions.

The first part of the document covers highlights on information security, with a deep dive on cybercrime, a subject very present over the past year due to the recent behavioral changes related to new forms of social, work, and trade interactions (driven by security measures in the fight against the pandemic). In the "Highlights" section, the topic of Ransomware was the main subject, with the mention of some important episodes related to data leakage in technology leaders.

In the "Statistics" section, the reader finds figures on vulnerabilities since 2018 and the top five cases on the perspective of study, sharing of knowledge and information through Top5 Project. The collection presented in these pages elucidates the behavioral process of attacks, their targets, methods, and nature, demonstrating that the advent of new technologies is closely linked to the conception of more robust and efficient security models.

In the "Update" section, a survey is presented on the main and most important initiatives by CAIS and other RNP teams to explain, disseminate, and share information and knowledge and promote collaboration in the entire community served. Next, is it possible to explore an article written by the Director of Engineering and Operations, Eduardo Grizendi, on the Cybersecurity of RNP and the year 2020.

Finally, the "Trends" section explores what is new - or not so new - that may become increasingly recurrent in 2021 and in the future. "These trends bring a more humane point of view, with a more educational perspective on the main events of the past year, helping everyone to obtain knowledge so they can contribute to important discussions in the academic and technical community that can converge in agile and increasingly intelligent solutions secure to all, in addition to providing an overview of the Information Security scenario in Brazil and worldwide," says the manager of CAIS/RNP, Edilson Lima.
