Over 1 million roaming authentications in Brazil

- 20/03/2015

RNP strongly invested in 2014 in the increase of access points to eduroam in Brazil, totaling 1,089, distributed throughout more than 40 institutions connected in the five regions of the country. This investment was essential for the organization to reach, in February this year, the milestone of over 1 million roaming authentications in Brazil.

Klaas Wierenga, the Dutch engineer responsible for sharing the initial idea of creating a service, which originated eduroam, congratulated RNP for this milestone. “Congratulations for this fantastic achievement. What took us several years to achieve in Europe, it took RNP and Brazil only a few,”  Wierenga stressed.

With a secure Wi-Fi network, the service allows its users to connect to the internet from any localization with eduroam access points, and the authentication is conducted with the credentials of the user’s home institution. Thus, one of the greatest benefits of this service, which is governed and operated in Brazil by RNP, is to offer safety and mobility to the researchers and other users.

Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences (in Portuguese, Mast/MCTI) IT Expert Alberto Wester (image) is responsible for the use of the service in the museum and a heavy eduroam user. “The greatest benefit is the ease to use the network everywhere the service is deployed, which includes even other countries. I use eduroam very often when I need to visit other institutions,” Wester highlighted. “The Mast team is very satisfied with the services offered by RNP to the scientific and technologic community. Now, we hope this service be expanded more and more,” he finished.

Latin America became the second region in the world with the largest eduroam coverage, with the increase of the access points in the past year. It is only behind Europe, where the service was conceived. In addition to a secure authentication, the service has as benefits its integration to CAFe.

Eduroam service in Telepresence rooms

The Telepresence rooms participators of the service managed by RNP now have eduroam access points. Therewith, the users that are part of this service’s client institutions may connect to the internet during a meeting, when necessary. All they need is eduroam set-up in their computer, cell phone or tablet to detect the wireless network in an automatic manner, ensuring their convenience and a high-quality experience.

If the user is not an eduroam member, they may still access the internet through the wired connection available in every rooms of the Telepresence service.
