The secretariats of Environment, Economic Development, Production and Family Agriculture (Semagro) and Treasury (Sefaz) of Mato Grosso do Sul signed a technical cooperation agreement with RNP to implement an optical network infrastructure in the state. This long-distance data communications infrastructure will interlink research and education institutions in Campo Grande and Dourados as a way to integrate and expand science and technology in the state.

According to Semagro, the agency will act as a partner in maintaining the network. "This is another step we take in encouraging the segment that must be treated with due importance to the State", said the person responsible, Jaime Verruck, for the Semagro portal.

The agreement proposed to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) provides for cooperation between the parties to promote the interconnection of governmental, state and municipal institutions and agencies to the Mato Grosso do Sul optical network, which will be connected to the national academic network, operated by RNP. In this way, researchers in these locations will be able to collaborate with their peers in the capital and in other Brazilian cities through a high quality network.

RNP coordinates the Veredas Novas Program and aims at connecting all the public universities campuses and technological institutes in the country at high speed. For this, it has established partnerships with state governments and with regional and local internet providers. One of the strategies is to create metropolitan networks within each state and interconnect them to the capital, for the integration of state and federal public institutions of education and research.

In March of this year, RNP had already signed a technical cooperation agreement with the Hokinet provider in Mato Grosso do Sul, for the construction of the metropolitan network in Dourados. The network will benefit local higher education and research institutions, such as the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD), the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS), the Federal Institute of Mato Grosso do Sul (IFMS) and Embrapa, and will receive resources from MCTIC, through the Veredas Novas Estaduais Program.
