History of the internet: the creation of RNP's Point of Presence in Piauí

The year was 1995. Eduilson Neves was a student at the State University of Piauí (Uepi) and was graduating as a technologist in Data Processing, when he was chosen to start the implementation of RNP's Point of Presence in Piauí.

It was then that he and four other people, Professor Walfran Batista, as general coordinator, Nadia Maria Dutra Lages and Maria do Socorro Guilherme de Carvalho, students at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) and Professor Luis Junior, technical director of Fapepi, were invited to take a one week internet course in Fortaleza, organized by RNP.

The didactic material consisted of handouts on the functioning of the internet, about electronic mail and also one of the first books on local networks in Brazil.

After taking the course, it took about six months to study how to assemble equipment and configure services, often reading manuals in English. According to Eduilson, many times it was necessary to combine the student routine with extra work. Due to lack of resources and incentives, the project did not go ahead. The expectation of a connection between Teresina and Fortaleza did not happen, and the project was abandoned at the time.

RNP's Point of Presence in Piauí was only created and integrated into the national backbone the following year, in 1996, with another team. But life goes round and learning was not in vain. Today, Eduilson Neves is President of the Steering Committee of Teresina's metropolitan network, Rede Poti.
