In January, the booming campuses of the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) in the state of Rio de Janeiro had a substantial increase of up to five times in Internet access speed, from 20 to 100 Mb / s. The contracting of these connections, carried out by RNP, directly benefits an estimated total of more than 16 thousand people, among students, teachers and administrative technicians of the units.
According to UFF, fiber optic connections are fully operational in seven cities: Volta Redonda, Angra dos Reis, Macaé, Santo Antônio de Pádua, Campos dos Goytacazes, Nova Friburgo and Petrópolis, through the Metropolitan Net of Petropolis.
For the UFF's dean, Antonio Claudio Lucas da Nóbrega, the internet at high speed is a leap of technological quality and contributes to promote scientific development, while giving greater agility in management. "The modernization of the network represents another step in the construction of an infrastructure to boost the university. With this, we can have more efficiency, both scientific and administrative, as it speeds up the exchange of information between sectors. The service improves the general conditions for the exercise of teaching, research and extension activities and facilitates the integration between the headquarters and the interior, "said Nóbrega, in a report published on the university's website.
According to the Superintendent of Information Technology at UFF, Helcio de Almeida Rocha, the initiative creates greater integration among university campuses through available technological resources, such as greater speed for data transfer and connection in videoconferences.
"We will have greater reliability in providing data and services because the transmission medium is fiber optic. The installation brings improvements to the entire university community, as support for more simultaneous access and better experience in sharing data, more agility in loading pages and upload data to the web, "explains Helcio Rocha; also in an interview with the UFF portal.
The access is unrestricted to all users properly linked to the UFF. The connection can be made either by wired network or by wireless network, by eduroam, RNP service.
