Energy crisis in Amapá: PoP operation is maintained by generating sets

- 18/12/2020

Amapá has been undergoing an unprecedented incident of energy isolation since November 3, when a power distribution failure affected 14 out of 16 municipalities in the state. The service was interrupted after fire at the main substation in the region, causing crisis that left the inhabitants totally without electricity.

In addition to the direct impact on essential services to the population, such as water supply, food and medicine preservation, a sector, which was also affected, was telecommunications, making access to telephone and internet difficult, and impeding communication in the middle of the crisis even locally.

The main education and research institutions in the state were isolated and had difficulties to access the internet. However, the operation of the Point of Presence of RNP in Amapá has been maintained during this period due to the support of its shelter institution, Universidade Federal do Amapá (Unifap), which, at the most critical moment of this crisis, provided fuel for the generating set that serves PoP.

According to the technical coordinator of the PoP-AP, Everton Vieira, due to the communication difficulty and the queues at the gas stations, it is possible for these institutions to face isolation from the national academic network and undergo unavailability to access the internet in the coming days. "Unfortunately, most of the user institutions are still isolated, but we can get a little relief in certain aspects, mainly in relation to PoP", Everton informed.

At the moment, the authorities have started a rationing plan in the energy supply, which will start in some places. According to Everton, as PoP-AP is located in an area close to the University Hospital of Unifap granted to the State Government for ICU and Covid Center, the energy supply is being normalized and the activity of the generating set has decreased considerably. "We still manage to get some fuel reserve to avoid any isolation incident," he assessed.
