Demonstration of the eCiber Network moves data at rates above 90Gb/s

The eCiber network is a high-speed infrastructure that is being implemented by RNP to serve national supercomputing centers and research laboratories, which need a high-performance structure for massive data transfers. At the RNP Forum, the network that has 100Gb/s links had its first public demonstration, moving data between the cities of Salvador (BA) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ) at rates above 90Gb/s already in this presentation.

Launched in April 2022, the eCiber project envisages the construction of a high-performance network with differentiated services and security policies tailored for scientific applications. The project is in the implementation phase to initially serve three institutions: Senai-Cimatec, the National Scientific Computing Laboratory (LNCC) and the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).

The initiative became viable following the renewal of the RNP backbone, which now has the possibility of implementing multiple 100Gbps channels. In this way, the new scientific network will be able to offer connectivity with guaranteed bandwidth and a better user experience. Another motivator is the growing interdependence between academic networks (NRENs) and Research Infrastructures, especially those capable of generating massive amounts of data that depend on high performance computing (HPC) to be processed.

The federal government's New PAC (Growth Acceleration Program), with resources from the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT), plans to expand the network to 12 more research centers, changing its name to the e-Science Network.
