First 4K transmission of a dermatological procedure

Concluding the discussions about health on the first day of the event, the RNP Forum brought a demonstration of the 4K use in the medical field. The Teledermatology SIG of the Telemedicine University Network (Rute) held, for the first time, a live broadcast with compression of a skin biopsy procedure at the University Hospital of Brasília (HUB), occupying less than 1 Gb/s of network bandwidth.

Dr. Ciro Gomes, of the HUB, conducted the exam. The transmission had been previously authorized by the patient with suspected American tegumentary leishmaniasis. “For this kind of procedure, the camera is very powerful,” said the doctor.

For the HUB Dermatology Professor Raimunda Nonata Ribeiro Sampaio, “the big weapon of the dermatologist is looking, and if that weapon is enlarged, it will help us a lot”. “The doctor conveniently treats it if he is sure of the diagnosis. In the case of leishmaniasis, medication is extremely toxic to the heart, the kidneys. So, the professional must be sure of the diagnosis,” she explained.

The RNP Manager Leandro Ciuffo and the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) Laboratory for Applications of Digital Video (LAVID) Researcher and Professor Guido Lemos explained that the challenge now is the 4K compressed images transmission, to enable their use in hospitals that do not have much network capacity.

“With compression, we lose quality. We need to estimate which imaging capabilities are necessary to develop the product engineering for hospitals to autonomously operate 4K,” Guido explained.

According to the Researcher, “the 4k is important for the second medical opinion, and now, as the cinemas are scanning, we can integrate our project with cultural initiatives, putting a 4K room in each city, with the Ministry of Culture (MinC) support”. “With a small investment, we have come to the state of world art in visualization projects,” he guaranteed.
