Cybersecurity projects between Brazil and the United States show results

- 07/11/2018

Solving cybersecurity issues that have made more and more victims worldwide. This is the goal of the five projects selected in the joint call between RNP (Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa - National Education and Research Network) and the US National Science Foundation (NSF), carried out in partnerships between universities and research centers in Brazil and in the United States. In order to share with society the first results of these initiatives, their representatives attended the Workshop de Cooperação Internacional em Segurança Cibernética -  WCISC (Workshop for International Cooperation on Cybersecurity), held on October 22,  XVIII Brazilian Symposium on Information Security and Computational Systems (SBSEG), in Natal (RN).

In September, the projects completed a year of execution, and their challenges are focused on security in the Internet of Things and Computer Networks Segments. The Insane Project, for example, aims to protect residential users by evaluating and handling data traffic on the network with the support of providers, without compromising the privacy of users' information. The HealthSense Project aims to develop an authentication solution that takes vital user data into account, thereby increasing the level of security in IoT medical devices.

In addition to the presentations of the projects, a pitches session was also promoted, so that the researchers of the event could propose themes for future partnerships. They had about five minutes to defend a topic of their interest. There were several suggestions, including machine learning applied to the Internet of Things, security in processors for cloud services, development of security testbeds, and identity management for IoT and blockchain. The suggestions were compiled and shared with NSF and MCTIC representatives.

At that time, the US coordinators also participated, as well as a representative of MCTIC, Ciro Ferreira, and two representatives of NSF, Suzanne and Phillip Regalia, who signaled possible continuity of cooperation by launching new calls for next year. The results of the projects will be better evaluated now that they have completed one year of execution and continue to the second and final year. In 2019, a new meeting to present the results will be held in the United States, thus promoting cooperation on both sides.

According to the Coordinator of Projects of RNP and Responsible for Cooperation, Wanderson Paim, this Workshop had an important role, because it was the first time that the American and Brazilian researchers of these projects met in a single event. “It was also a great opportunity to present the results of the projects to the cybersecurity research community in Brazil. Next year, this workshop will be held next to the NSF event, which will promote the meeting between the coordinators of the projects financed by them. It will also be the space for researchers to enter new partnerships and, perhaps, submit projects in a next joint call”, said Paim.
