fone@RNP

fone@RNP provides an alternative, collaborative channel, which brings savings for the telephone service of its participants. It operates by forwarding phone calls through the Ipê network, RNP’s high performance backbone, which enables users to call each other at no cost for the calls. Through an agreement between the participants, fone@RNP allows long distance calls for landlines in the public network and for certain universities across the world, also free of charge.

There are no costs for adhesion or monthly fees to join the service*. The counterpart to be part of this network is to help deliver the phone calls for landlines intended to your city. The phone calls are forwarded for the IP network in a transparent manner for the person making the call and, immediately following the installation of fone@RNP, the institution begins to save. All users enjoy the solution, without the need for disclosure or training.

The conventional PABX call with the IP network is performed by a device developed in Brazil, featuring national hardware and software. This makes fone@RNP a solution compatible with decree 8,135 and the Interministerial Ordinance 141, on the security of the solutions deployed in national public institutions. In addition, RNP also developed an open code IP PBX, free from payment of licenses of use for the user institutions, without limits for IP extensions and deployed in virtual machines. This solution contributes even further with the reduction of costs with the deployment of the telephone service. **

In average, fone@RNP has managed to serve 90% of the long distance calls for landlines of institutions, representing approximately 28% of the total of the phone bill. In some cases, institutions report over 50% of reduction in the phone bill.

*The pricing policy may change. In this case, the participants shall be notified in advance.

**Although RNP has developed the IP PBX, RNP does not provide “PBX maintainer” services. Therefore, this service must be hired from third parties or undertaken by the solution’s user institutions, as in the case of adoption of whichever other market solution.

International agreements

RNP is a member of international NRENs (National Research and Education Networks), institutions equivalent to RNP in other countries, who agreed to publish the phone numbers that are reached by their VoIP networks. This means that our clients may call these institutions at zero cost. Similarly, these countries may also call our phones with no costs for them.

This international service is called NRENum.net. Currently, there are over 30 countries participating in this initiative. Visit the website and learn more.

How it works

fone@RNP is a telephony service that uses the Voice over IP (VoIP) technology and the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), and interconnects the traditional telephony network to the IP network through a hardware developed in Brazil.

Positioned in the E1 connection between the traditional PABX and the operator, the Transparent Gateway (TGW) is capable to forward the calls through the least cost route, choosing between the local operator and the fone@RNP network. Thus, there is no need for any change in the way the users to perform calls. See the video class (link is external) on the installation and configuration of the TGW.

This solution may be accompanied by other modules, which allow expanding fone@RNP through the various sites of a multi campi institution. The Local SIP Router (LSR) is a Proxy SIP designed exclusively for the use of fone@RNP. It is a sort of “route administrator”, which will know each module installed within its institution, in addition to the route for the numbers served by fone@RNP. Another important module is the IP PBX, developed to be deployed as virtual machines. It is free from licenses and may be used by any institution in new installations. The joint, coordinated use of these 3 modules allow the expansion of a pre-existing telephony network, sharing pre-existing DIDs, extensions and trunks.

Important!

As with any other deployment, the telephone over IP service is subject to IP’s advantages and disadvantages. The deployment and maintenance of an IP telephone service require qualified professionals. It is recommended that the institution adopts Quality of Service (QoS) in its IP network, and it is indispensable that it promotes and coordinates the dialogue between the networks, security and telephony (or equivalent) teams.

Responsibilities of the participants of fone@RNP

As previously mentioned, the institutions that wish to make phone calls to landlines in other cities must deliver phone calls from other institutions to its city in return. Smooth operation of this model requires that both RNP and the institutions undertake certain responsibilities. The following board sums these duties:

Activity RNP Collaborator
Forward the calls through the backbone X
Operate the Central SIP Router servers X
Maintain the fone@RNP installation and operation manuals updated X
Publish the service statistics X
Monitor all elements of fone@RNP X
Provide technical support to the institutions X
Acquire the necessary equipment   X
Perform installations, configurations and updates of the local modules of fone@RNP   X
Be or hire the IP PBX maintainer   X
Provide local support to the users of the telephony service    X

How to subscribe

Adhesion to the fone@RNP service is open to all of RNP’s client institutions, as long as the technical pre-requirements for the use of the VoIP technology are met. The institution must also read and agree with the service’s User Policy and be accredited as a user.

The adhesion must be requested by the manager appointed by its institution’s top manager, usually the director responsible for the technology area. To adhere, send an e-mail to the Service Desk or dial 0800 722 0216.

 Online monitoring of fone@RNP

The map below corresponds to the online monitoring of the fone@RNP service in the client institutions. You may have an instant view of the availability of the service in the indicated place, in an interactive manner, by selecting the region and the institutions in this map. The color green indicates the client institutions that have the local infrastructure under operation, while the color red signals unavailability, and the yellow color shows that some problem may prejudice the proper local functioning of the VoIP.

If your institution is a fone@RNP client and is not featured in the map below, ask the local responsible for the service to reach RNP’s Service Desk, through the phone 0800 722 0216 or via e-mail at sd@rnp.br. Impressions of use of the system or possible problems may be sent to the Service Desk.
