Universities form consortium to bring high-capacity internet to the interior of Rio Grande do Sul

- 11/05/2023

The Consortium of Community Universities in Rio Grande do Sul (Comung) signed a partnership with the National Education and Research Network (RNP) to implement the Butiá network, a program for the distribution of shared high-capacity internet in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The launch and signing of the Butiá Network's memorandum of understanding took place on 5/12, from 10 am to 12 pm, at HUB One Feevale, in Porto Alegre (RS).

Rede Butiá is a community state network of education, research and innovation, whose objective is to connect the 14 institutions that form the consortium and integrate them into RNP's Point of Presence in Rio Grande do Sul (PoP-RS). In this way, these universities will be connected at high speed with the national academic network, the Ipê network, operated and maintained by RNP, and will be able to collaborate with institutions in Brazil and in the world for teaching and research purposes.

In the future, the Butiá network will be able to integrate the future Infovia RS, a network project of the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The partnership agreement takes effect on the date of signature and will remain in force for six months, which may be extended for as many periods as necessary.

Comung contributed from a working group formed to collect information on needs, infrastructure and market for the implementation of a subnetwork of Infovia RS, in partnership with private providers. It also acted in the identification of partners that are interested in collaborating in the implementation of the network through the transfer of infrastructure.

“With the integration of the Butiá Network into the RNP System, the possibilities for collaboration with education and research institutions in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul are expanded. This experience inaugurates a state community network model that qualifies science, education and innovation in an inclusive, collaborative and efficient way. We are excited about the dissemination of new uses, highly demanding applications and the opportunities to support regional development by qualifying its arrangements and talents", highlights RNP's general director, Nelson Simões.

Comung is now responsible for coordinating institutional and technical actions in cooperation with RNP; promote agreements and counterparts on behalf of its associates; and coordinate the interlocution of its associates with RNP and PoP-RS.
