RNP launches Recursive DNS service for the academic community

When we access content on the Internet, such as a video on Youtube for example, this data travels a long way to reach our homes. Depending on where this content is hosted, this can greatly affect the end-user experience. In the traffic of our academic network, it would be no different.

In order to improve the experience of using the Ipê network and accessing its services, RNP launches EduDNS, a Recursive DNS service (Anycast) that can be used by all RNP User Organizations. 

The service was designed to have 100% availability and to run on multiple servers located at different Points of Presence, which makes it continue to work even with multiple failures. Among the benefits for the teaching and research community are high network availability, resilience and security.

Before EduDNS, other services offered by the market were used for the same purpose. However, there were disadvantages. The main one is the issue of data privacy, since queries of website names on the Internet (DNS, the acronym Domain Name System) could be analyzed by third parties. Today, EduDNS complies with legal aspects of the Marco Civil da Internet (Brazilian Internet Civil Rights Framework) and the General Law for the Protection of Personal Data (LGPD).

Why use Anycast?

Through the IP Anycast technique, it is possible to run multiple replicas of a service in different locations using the same IP address. In this way, the router chooses the shortest path to forward the packet and, consequently, accesses the node closest to the service.

A major advantage of IP Anycast is associated with availability. In the event that any service cluster fails in a given location, the user is automatically forwarded to another service delivery point (cluster).

How to join the service?

The service is available via IP addresses {200.19.16.53, 200.137.53.53, 2001:12f0:253::53 and 2001:12f0:353::53} and responds recursively when used from the organization's network.
