Brazil presents work on connectivity in the Atlantic Ocean in WACREN 2021

- 25/03/2021

Michael Stanton, a network scientist at RNP, represented Brazil by co-presenting a work about connectivity in the Atlantic Ocean during the sixth edition of the Annual Conference of WACREN - West and Central Africa Research and Education Network. Hosted by the academic network in Benin, West Africa, the event took place digitally between 15-19 of March and had the topic "Digital Transformation for Development".

The paper presented, "Introducing new technologies, innovations, and collaborations in networks for education and research between Africa, Latin America, Europe, and the United States through new international projects," was submitted by authors of RNP, RedCLARA, the national networks of South Africa (TENET and SANReN), and of the Florida International University (FIU), located in Miami, United States.

In addition to Michael Stanton (RNP), Shukri Wiener, executive director of the academic network in South Africa (TENET), and Julio Ibarra, coordinator of CIARA (Center for Internet Augmented Research and Assessment), Information Technology department of Florida International University (FIU) also participated in the presentation of the work.

In his presentation, Michael Stanton described the connectivity updates in RedCLARA, the regional network in Latin America and in the Atlantic Ocean, implemented since 2018, connecting directly, without going through other continents, Brazil and Latin America with partner networks in Africa and Europe, complementing the historical direct connections with North America.

"The work brings updates on the status of the connectivity between the networks of Latin America countries and RedCLARA and its direct connection with Europe built by the project BELLA (Building Europe Link to Latin America)," said Stanton.

Shukri Wiener, the South African host, presented the evolution up to 100 and 400 Gb/s of South Africa's academic network (SANReN). Finally, Julio Ibarra, from the USA, described the evolution of the projects AmLight ExPress, connecting CIARA/FIU with networks in Latin America and Africa, and AtlanticWave SDX 2.0, a prototype for a "software-defined exchange point" (SDX) to administer the connection between large networks with high performance.
