OEA Cyberwomen Challenge Brasil will be carried out in Recife

- 16/12/2019

On November 29th, female students from higher education institutions or public employees that work in the Information and Communication Technology Area (ICT) may participate in the second edition of OEA Cyberwomen Challenge Brasil. This time, the event – that began in 2018 – will be held at Casarão from Universidade Católica de Pernambuco at 8 am with limited spaces.

The Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (RNP) together with the Organization of American States (OEA), to Trend Micro, to the Government of the United Kingdom, to Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE) and with the support of Universidade Católica de Pernambuco (UNICAP), promote the free workshop to improve the work of women in an area that is mostly dominated by men. According to a survey from the Brazilian Survey per Sample of Households (PNAD), women are only 20% of the 580 thousand ICT professionals in Brazil.

According to Liliana Solha, manager of information security from RNP, the event – in the format of cyber-exercise and competition – will challenge the teams to test their knowledges and skills in the cybersecurity field. “based on a ludic simulator, participants will receive challenges and will get points as the steps of these challenges are completed. As in a game, they will alternate in two roles. On one side, they will work as ‘hackers’ that attack a certain critical data server and in another, they will represent cybersecurity specialists in defense of the same infrastructure. The aim is to stimulate the competences of these professionals so they identify attacks more quickly and know how to solve problems,” she comments.

The event has the financial support of the United Kingdom Government that has been committed in promoting the insertion of women in IT academic and public sectors, which have a lack of female representativity.  The winning team of the Brazilian edition will have the opportunity of participating in the OEA Regional Cyberwomen Challenge, together with the winning teams from other member countries of OEA. In addition, the winners will be awarded with credits to take part in the  courses offered in the AWS educational platform of Amazon.

In 2018, the team that won the edition held in Florianópolis got the opportunity of taking part in the OEA Regional Cyberwomen Challenge meeting held in Chile. There, the team won the competition of Americas and received several prizes.
