Unicamp is the first university to use RNP's modular curb

- 23/08/2022

The State University of Campinas (Unicamp) will be the first institution to have underground optical fiber cables inside its main campus using the modular curb solution, developed by RNP, which consists of curb guides with channels for the passage of the optical fiber cable.

The pilot project had representatives from RNP, Inova Unicamp, and partner companies Agretal, Ômega Engenharia, Prysmian, Empretec and Duraline, who met on 8/18 at the Inova Unicamp events space for a moment of fraternization and explanations about the project.

On the occasion, the group was able to observe in loco the moment in which the cables were inserted into the microducts that are placed in the channels, inside the modular curbs, in a stretch of about 1.3 km between the RNP building and the Innova Unicamp Agency.

The next steps include new resistance tests, business modeling and market prospecting to attract new partners to spread its use.

About the modular curb

The modular curb is the first product launched by RNP as an infrastructure solution for connectivity to solve common problems in cities and make them smarter.

The solution consists of perforated curb guides, fitted together, functioning as channels for the passage of optical fiber.

The innovation is applicable not only to the telecommunications area, for the passage of telecommunications cables, but also for electric power cables.

Among the main benefits for the civil construction market, the modular curb avoids the large number of aerial installations on poles, underground congestion, in addition to promoting better use of urban space.

The idea came up in RNP's Engineering and Operations Board and was registered in the organization's Intellectual Asset Portfolio Management System (GPAI), with a patent registered at the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), in 2015.
