With the 97 existing ones, the new telemedicine units exceed the mark of 100 created Rute units, approved and in operation in Brazil. After this milestone, Rute Coordinator stated as the next step the network advancement within the country.

"Our biggest challenge is in the municipalities, which must be connected by RNP until the end of 2014. Additionally, in our 2015 plan, we predicted the direct connection between Brazil and Africa, with new integration channels, which will strengthen the communication bonds and collaboration between regions,” said Messina. He also showed the ultimate book of the initiative, Rute 100, “which brings a good overview of telemedicine and telehealth actions”.

After that, the Fernandes Figueira Institute (IFF/Fiocruz) Coordinator Angélica Baptista Silva recalled the beginning of the project when, between 2006 and 2008, 19 institutions made up the Telemedicine University Network (Rute).

According to the coordinator, “the telemedicine was consolidated in the education field with SIGs (Special Interest Groups)”. For the next steps, she expects a systematized monitoring of the Rute network.

The Phase II Rute Coordinator and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) Otorhinolaryngology Professor Jose Diniz Junior highlighted the efforts to include Rute and telemedicine in residency, graduate, and extension programs on health conducted by the university.

“If you want to change, evaluate. We are putting the words telemedicine, telehealth and Rute in books, exams, and competitions,” said the teacher, who also said that the local Rute core has been increasingly used. “The room has been increasingly used for qualifications, promoting economy of resources with the boards,” explained.

The Rute-Endorsement Unit Coordinator Jeane Couto, of the Integrative Medicine Professor Fernando Figueira Institute (IMIP), said that “virtually all projects is connected to telehealth because the institution has internalized the importance of the area”. The achievement is significant because the IMIP is the largest charity hospital in the region, which meets 100% the Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS), serving the poor population in Pernambuco.

Finally, the SIG Rute - Intensive and High Complexity Nursing Coordinator Lilian Behring showed the human side of the effort to employ ICTs in health, especially in telemedicine. “When we talk about IT, we talk about a dream of bringing the technology to improve the population health and thereby save lives”, she concluded.
