RNP participates in the Brasília Festival of Brazilian Cinema

- 22/09/2014

On Monday (9/22), the RNP participates in the 47th edition of the Brasília Festival of Brazilian Cinema, with demonstrations of transmission and projection technologies in 4K resolution, in partnership with the Laboratory for Applications of Digital Video (LAVID), of the Federal University of Paraiba (Universidade Federal da Paraíba – UFPB), and accessibility and public gauging sytems, a resource used for counting people in the movie theater.

A movie in 4K will be presented with the Brazilian Sign Language window (CineLibras), a translation assistive technology of movie subtitles to Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) and audio description (CineAD), automatically generated from the subtitles and the screenplay, respectively. Both features will also be available in second screen devices (tablets and smartphones).

Developed by LAVID with the support of RNP, these technologies comprise all coding and 4K cinema management workflow. The encoding, transmission (live and on demand), storage and display of HD, 2K and 4K videos are made by Fogo Player Suite, a set of softwares that can also manage live broadcasts in the telemedicine system and expanded cinema.

The Fogo Player Suite and the system of accessibility and public gauging focus on low cost. Besides being a complete system, the Fogo Player has another great advantage compared to other 4K players in the market: it uses normal personal computers sold in any computer store. Technically, this is called “commodity hardware”, or commercial off-the-shelf (COTS). This makes it much cheaper to implement than systems using supercomputers, which is extremely important for the spread of new movie theaters all over Brazil.

Likewise, the VLibras, CineAD, and the system of public gauging use common personal computers without the need for specific hardware, which makes the whole system viable and attractive for non-commercial movie theaters.

The show is open to the public and is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., in the main auditorium of the National Museum (Museu Nacional), in Brasília.
