RNP activates new high-capacity circuits integrating different regions of the country

- 25/08/2022

The National Teaching and Research Network increased the capacity of two strategic stretches of its academic network – between the states of Paraná and São Paulo and between Bahia and the Federal District – to 100 Gb/s, integrating the five Brazilian regions with very high-performance connections.

According to the Deputy Director of Engineering and Operations, Ari Frazão Júnior, the new channels allow traffic exchanges to be made at 100 Gb/s between any RNP Points of Presence connected to this capacity. “That is, a connection at 100 Gb/s between the states of Amazonas and Rio Grande do Sul, for example, became possible”, stated Frazão.

Still according to the manager, this means that soon, when the equipment of the metropolitan networks is updated, it will be possible for the other institutions connected to the Brazilian academic network to take advantage of this capacity for their teaching and research activities.

It will also allow these units to collaborate with institutions abroad in very high-capacity connections that are already available today through the Monet cable, which connects South America and North America, as well as through the EllaLink cable, which connects Brazil and Europe.

Institutions in Latin America will also be able to benefit from this infrastructure with the assignment of channels that will be made by RNP between Fortaleza and Porto Alegre, in return for participating in the BELLA project (Building Europe Link to Latin America), which aims to intensify collaboration activities between South America and Europe.

About the Ipê Network 7th Generation Project

Circuits PR-SP, activated in partnership with Telebras, and BA-DF, through an agreement with the energy company Taesa, are part of the Ipê network 7th Generation project, which aims at the technological evolution of the academic network, placing it on the same level as the most advanced networks in the world.

The Ipê network has connections at 100 Gb/s since 2018, as a result of the partnership between RNP and Companhia Hidrelétrica do São Francisco (Chesf), through shared use of infrastructure, starting its “gigatization” in the Northeast. Then came new agreements with Eletrobras, in the South region, with Telebras, in the North region, and with Taesa and I.E. Madeira, in the North, Midwest and Northeast regions of the country.
