Interconnection between Belém and Macapá at 1 Gbps is completed

- 08/08/2016

Since August 1st, the RNP backbone is fully “gigatized”. Now, all Points of Presence (PoP) are served in Gbps, with the completion of interconnection of last PoP-AP in Macapá.

At first, two circuits totaled a speed of 250 Mbps, but now the connection between Belém and Pará has a capacity of 1 Gbps, provided by Compuservice. Such connection between PoP-PA to PoP-AP also has a backup of 200 Mbps in radio, by the Marajó Island, in the State of Pará.

The extension of the circuit capacity directly benefits the educational, research and health institutions of the State of Amapá such as, for instance, the Federal and State Universities – Unifap and UEPA, respectively, the Technological and Scientific Research Institute of the State of Amapá (IEPA), the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa – AP), the Weight and Measure Institute (IPEM-AP) and the Amapá Federal Institute (IFAP).

Since 2005, RNP is pursuing high-capacity connections, at 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps in its backbone. So much so that in the same year, it was updated with several optical links, operating at multi-gigabit per second.

In 2011, Ipê network reached the aggregate capacity of 213.2 Gbps, an increase of 244% regarding the previous aggregate capacity. Some sections of North Region, however, still represent some challenges, especially in Northern Amazon.

“Even with a challenging economic environment, we continue working in order to gigatize our network without increasing costs. With this strategy, we seek alternatives and we were able to connect the last three points since last year’s end up to date, with the interconnection of Belem to Manaus at 1 Gbps in December 2015, and Manaus to Boa Vista at the same speed, in June this year. With this recent connection activation between Belém and Macapá, without costs increase, we reached a great goal, which meets all network internalization work, by the Veredas Novas initiative, pursued by us during four years”, said the RNP Engineering and Operations Officer, Eduardo Grizendi.
