BELLA Project: direct connection to Europe to open during TICAL 2021

The long-awaited connectivity of the BELLA project, which builds the first direct connection between South America and Europe, via the Ellalink submarine cable, will be officially inaugurated during the 11th edition of the TICAL Conference, between 8/30 and 9/2. This year, the event, which brings together the Information and Communication Technologies community in Latin America, takes place virtually and free of charge, with the theme “Rethinking the university driven by digital technologies”, together with the 5th Latin American e-Science Meeting.

The minister of Science, Technology and Innovations Astronaut Marcos Pontes will participate in the opening of the event, on August 30, at 11:00 am, officially inaugurating the BELLA Project connectivity, alongside the director of the Latin American Cooperation of Advanced Networks (RedCLARA), Luis Eliécer Cadenas.

Next, technical teams will perform a data transfer demonstration of the Earth Observation project of the European Union - Copernicus - using BELLA connectivity, passing through academic networks in Latin America, including the Ipê network (RNP) in Brazil, and the Ellalink submarine cable, until reaching the academic network of Géant, Europe.

This year, the second edition of TICALSec takes place, with sessions dedicated to Cybersecurity, where RNP, through its Security Incident Response Team (CAIS) will sign a cooperation agreement with RedCLARA for the creation of a Coordination Committee for Activities in Information Security and Cybersecurity, with the participation of academic networks from Ecuador (CEDIA), Mexico (RedCUDI) and Chile (REUNA).

On 9/1, Luiz Ary Messina, coordinator of the University Telemedicine Network (RUTE) and president of the Brazilian Association of Telemedicine and Telehealth (ABTms), will be the guest speaker at the plenary session, and will make a presentation on the topic “Building and Disseminating Health Network Knowledge in Latin America”.

On September 2, at the end of the event, RNP will present the article accepted in the TICAL call for papers, written in collaboration with the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), about Assin@UFSC, a centralized solution for digital signature.

Program highlights

TICAL 2021 will have two sessions in parallel and plenary sessions with the participation of international experts, including Martin Hilbert, professor at the University of California, Davis; Pawel Swieboda, director general of the Human Brain Project; Francesc Pedró, director of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean; César Hidalgo, president of the Institute of Artificial and Natural Intelligence (ANITI) at the University of Toulouse; and Marcelo Cabrol, manager of the Social Sector at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
