Internet access: six companies will operate Infovia 00 in the North of the country

- 05/08/2022

The six companies that will operate, maintain and share Infovia 00 signed, on 7/29, the Neutral Operator open consortium contract for this infovia. They are: Aquamar, BRDigital, ClickIP/ICOM Telecom, SEA Telecom, Fortel/Wirelink and Telefonica.

Now, these companies, operators and telecommunication service providers will have the right to use and commercially exploit, for 15 years, a pair of optical fibers of the 770 km long sub-fluvial cable, from Macapá to Santarém, ending in Alenquer, installed under the bed of the Amazon River by the National Teaching and Research Network (RNP).

"Completing the constitution of this consortium is an important milestone for Infovia 00, and also for the Norte Conectado Program, as the model serves as a reference for sharing, operating and maintaining other infovias in the program, in particular, Infovia 01, the next one that is already being implemented and will start operating at the beginning of next year", declared RNP's Director of Engineering and Operations, Eduardo Grizendi.

Infovia 00 connects the cities of Macapá (AP) and Alenquer (PA), with openings in the Pará municipalities of Almeirim, Monte Alegre and Santarém, with a total population of 968 thousand inhabitants. It is the pilot project of the Norte Conectado Program, which is part of the Sustainable Integrated Amazon Program (PAIS).

In return for the use of optical fibers, the six companies will operate and maintain the entire infrastructure. The chosen model was to constitute a Neutral Operator open consortium, as all consortium members make use of the infrastructure offering their services under equal conditions.

The public sector will be able to use six pairs of the 48 pairs of optical fibers in the cable for its own use, connecting universities, schools and public bodies to high-speed internet, for example. Operating and maintenance costs will be borne by the consortium. At the moment, RNP works in activating the connection of the campuses of the Federal University of Amapá (Unifap), the Federal University of Western Pará (Ufopa) and the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Pará (IFPA).
