Women in STEM, blockchain and digital health were the themes of the last day of #ForumRNP2021

- 26/11/2021

The #ForumRNP2021 ended today! There were 5 days of great knowledge and exchange of experiences. Check out the coverage of the last day of the event here:

Women in STEM

The last day of Forum RNP 2021 started with a necessary theme: the job market for women in STEM (from the acronym Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The panel was mediated by RNP's Relationship Analyst Sonia Melo, who at the time represented the Meninas Exatas group – formed by women from RNP and from institutions that comprise the RNP System, with the objective of encouraging the participation of women in science and technology careers .

To add to the discussion, the executive director of Ernst & Young Brazil, Andreia Dias, was invited and presented the company's case on the topic, called Woman In Tech (WIT). "When we look at the market and see the number of women in top leadership, we start to notice the discrepancy", introduced Andreia, when presenting data that show that, in Latin America, only 8.3% of management positions are occupied by women. Specifically, in Brazil, this number is even lower: it reaches 1%.

WIT aims to reduce gender inequality in STEM by creating an environment where girls and women are encouraged to enter, remain and thrive in the areas concerned. In her presentation, Andreia explained the methodology adopted in the program, which currently has an impact on 3,339 people. “The pillars of WIT are: attract and retain; incubate and grow; inspire and encourage; and connect and collaborate. The idea is that we give what we can to transform this society into what we dream of it actually being”, concluded the executive director of Ernst & Young Brasil.

Blockchain and Digital Health

With the participation of IFBA professor, Allan Edgard, and Unifesp professor, Arlindo Flavio da Conceição, the panel discussed the blockchain's potential in the health area. The blockchain provides a reliable data source solution. The benefits are many: it has immutability properties, it is decentralized, it offers auditable solutions, among others.

Highlights of blockchain usage in healthcare are data sharing, supply chain tracking, decentralized patient identity control, data sharing for research, and implementation of framework automation. “In the future, the blockchain should primarily be used as a reliable record of a network's actions”, said Arlindo.

The history of the RNP Forum

At the closing panel of the RNP 2021 Forum, one of the objectives was to celebrate and tell the story of the event, which in this edition celebrates 10 years. According to the Director of Administration and Finance at RNP, José Luiz Ribeiro Filho, the objective of the RNP Forum has always been clear: to allow dialogue with the community of ICT managers, to listen to their needs and demands.

In its first edition, the RNP Forum had around 300 in-person participants. Over 10 years, the event has grown a lot. In its last in-person edition, there were approximately 900 subscribers. This year, in digital format and in partnership with the 10th CBTMS and CBIS 2021, 5,535 participants followed the event remotely. There were 100 sessions and almost 100 hours of content.

“It is a great pleasure to welcome you to our house, the RNP Forum is ours. The event has always been designed for the community, for the RNP System, so that we can have the opportunity to share knowledge”, said the director of Services and Solutions at RNP, Antônio Carlos Fernandes Nunes.

15 years of Escola Superior de Rede (ESR)

RNP, since its foundation, has been supported by three pillars: advanced network infrastructure, information security and training in communication technologies. Celebrating 15 years of existence, Escola Superior de Redes (ESR) was created with the objective of structuring a model for offering training to the academic community.

“Imagine the responsibility of being the organization that brought the internet to the country. When we went to dialogue with institutions, people did not know what a network was, what a router was... From the beginning, training was present and it materialized from the ESR. It is a practical and intensive training, and this project is still there today, reaching thousands of people and continuing to open up a range of new skills”, said the assistant director of ESR Services, Luiz Coelho.

Celebration of digital health, telemedicine and telehealth in Brazil

RNP's Health Relationship Manager, Luiz Ary Messina, and the Digital Health Specialist, Paulo Lopes, participated in the panel to commemorate 15 years of the Telemedicine University Network (RUTE). RUTE is an initiative that aims to support the improvement of telemedicine projects and encourage the emergence of future work. “It is a collaborative network in digital health, reaching 140 university hospitals, with more than 50 special interest groups”, explained Messina.

About the future of telemedicine, Messina stated that the pandemic was a driving force behind the practice. “With everything we've achieved, all these 140 equipped institutions, very well connected and linked to the culture of digital health, have no return. The practice of telemedicine will increase more and more and reach all professionals. If the professional has not yet been involved in telemedicine, he will be very soon. And those who are not, will miss many opportunities”, he said.

The panel also celebrated 35 years of the Brazilian Society of Health Informatics (SBIS), with testimonials from the founders and a tribute to the bases of digital health, telemedicine and telehealth in Brazil. Finally, dr. Juliano Gaspar, from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, led the awards for the 125 works presented during the week, at the 10th CBTMS and at CBIS 2021.

Closing

Nelson Simões, director general of RNP, closed the event by thanking the organizers of the 10th CBTMS and CBIS 2021 and the RNP 2021 Forum team. “Together, we had an exceptional event this week, with a lot of people, a lot of collaboration and interaction. These were the main reasons why people came here, shared their knowledge, and showed us ideas that encourage us to continue carrying out the premise that we are going to develop and, thus, develop the country”, he concluded.
