RNP organized a Sismoi-Semárido Indicator Consolidation workshop, in Campina Grande (PB), on June 12 and 13. Hosted by the Federação das Indústrias do Estado da Paraíba (FIEP) and Núcleo Regional do Instituto Euvaldo Lodi (IEL), the meeting addressed the theme 'Indicators for Water, Food and Energy Security and Climate Change Impacts in the Semi-arid', which is part of the development of the Sistema Brasileiro de Monitoramento e Observação dos Impactos das Mudanças Climáticas(Sismoi) platform.

Representatives of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe) and the Brazilian Department of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC) actively participated in the organization and performance of the event and are RNP partners in the platform development. Sismoi aims to integrate climate components to support the formulation of public policies for the environmental, economic and social areas. “The purpose of this collaborative phase was to give scientific validity to the climate change impact indicators that will be available in the system,” said RNP Business Analyst responsible for Sismoi, Daniele Sodré.

To promote greater environmental awareness of civil society and ensure a lower risk of private sector investment, the platform will disseminate up-to-date information on the effects and impacts of climate changes. The release is expected for the next semester of this year and will have the prelude in the Northeastern Semiarid, an area of great vulnerability to these changes, especially in the thematic cut of water resources.

“The platform will help us to better understand the risks and thus plan adaptation actions from now on to reduce exposure and vulnerability associated with climate change in the northeastern semiarid region, and then in the Amazon, the Pampas, finally, across the country,” said MCTIC S&T analyst, Rodrigo Braga.

According to deputy coordinator of Inpe Earth System Science Center (CCST), Peter Toledo, the objective is to provide decision-makers with information related to future impacts of climate changes in different segments of society: socio-environmental, economic, social and health. She also adds her vision on the joint effort between Inpe and RNP:  "This partnership is strategic, precisely in this issue regarding information production, its dissemination and the best tools for this information to reach each citizen. We have created a partnership with great potential.”
