RNP launches guide that supports institutions to transfer high performance data

- 12/01/2017

In order to assist IT managers in institutions that house research labs or computing centers which demand improvements in network performance, RNP has launched the Science DMZ Guide (In Portuguese), which guides these professionals on how to deploy a Science DMZ architecture.

This model consists of creating a network environment optimized for high-performance data transfers and is ideal for scientific applications, since many of them require the movement of data in the order of gigabytes or even terabytes per day. “Communication networks become a critical element to enable and promote e-Science, because if each collaborative experiment take days or weeks to transfer the data between the institutions, collaborative research can become impractical”, says the manager of Communities and Advanced Applications of RNP, Leandro Ciuffo.

By deploying the Science DMZ architecture, institutions may improve the level of service to its customers with different demands of network, such as researchers who need to make transfers over long distances and increase its presence in international collaborative research. “Being prepared to perform large data transfers in the 'Big Data' era can stimulate an increase in participation in research projects, publications and research activities of the institution”, says Leandro Ciuffo.

Laboratory of Genetics and Plant Biotechnology of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) is one of the successful cases in the use of this infrastructure. The research center participates in the InterSis Network, which studies biotic interactions of various organisms using bioinformatics tools. The network includes 14 working groups in eight Brazilian institutions in five states, as well as five international partners.
