Data from 23 terrestrial sedimentary basins are made available for free

- 27/05/2021

Recently, the Brazilian Geological Service (SGB/CPRM) and the National Agency of Oil, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP) launched, in partnership, a website to provide, free of charge, technical, public, and digital data on 23 terrestrial sedimentary basins in Brazil. Before that, this information was paid. Now, anyone interested can download the data from the Reate online platform, which aims to promote the expansion of geological knowledge about these basins, promote investments and give visibility to information that supports better decision-making by public managers and private companies.

There are 23 data packs, which gather information relating to 22,641 wells, 329 2D seismic surveys, 204 3D seismic surveys, 217 non-seismic surveys, 38 geochemical surveys, and 17 existing studies on the technical data collection of the ANP Exploration and Production Database (BDEP). The volume of information is approximately 2.5 terabytes for now. The website will be updated whenever new data is made public.

The set of data, considered the largest project of data provision by the BDEP, is hosted in a super server of CPRM in the  Internet Data Center (IDC) of RNP, in Brasília, where it relies on a robust high-grade IT infrastructure. In addition, universities and research centers also have high-speed access to the material through the Ipê Network. "The hosting for the solution was made available on the modern operating environment of hyper-convergence deployed in RNP's datacenter. This, combined with the large throughput capacity of the institution, we believe, will deliver a solution that provides a good user experience and meets the objectives of the Reate program. In addition, rigorous cyber security criteria are followed, something essential with the increase in remote accesses. The environment of this important project provides a redundancy capacity that can be escalated as the need for growth is identified. This ensures great flexibility to meet new and future demands from partnerships like these between the SGB/CPRM, RNP, and ANP", argues the Geo-Scientific Infrastructure Director of SGB/CPRM, Paulo Afonso Romano.

The availability of data on the 23 Brazilian basins is one of the results from a series of modernization actions experienced in recent years by SGB/CPRM, mainly in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). With pride, the Director Geo-Scientific Infrastructure of the institution explains the process of digital transformation accelerated by the novel coronavirus pandemic. "In 2020, this evolution was taken to another level. The strong need to work remotely showed that investments in technology infrastructure were very assertive. With an emphasis on connectivity, in which the partnership with RNP was fundamental to bring significant gains in digital performance. In other words, it was possible to give continuity to the operations while protecting servers and employees, in addition to the population. Through this update of ICT infrastructure and partnerships such as this, we built a more efficient routine, with the possibility of improved services provided to society as a whole," concludes Romano.
